Measuring a Dog Bed: 3 Tips on How To Measure for a Dog Bed Sheet

Measuring Tips for Dog Bed Cover by PawSheets Dog Bed Sheets

Dog beds come in all sizes and shapes. Dog owners know that keeping a dog bed, and the dog bed cover, clean is a challenge. When we tested a white dog bed sheet on our black Labrador’s bed, it was filthy in just three days!

The most common question submitted to PawSheets, is “what size dog bed sheets do I need”? The most common reason for a return is “the dog bed sheet was too small”. Needless to say, measuring a dog bed is not as straightforward as you might think. Here are three tips to help you determine what size dog bed sheet you need for your dog’s (or any pet’s) bed.

MEASURING TIP 1 - DETERMINE THE DOG BED SHAPE AND STYLE

Dog beds are available in dozens of shapes and sizes (maybe hundreds). Listed below are a few basic dog bed types:

  • Standard Dog Bed - These resemble a big cushion or pillow and do not have rims or fancy features. They can be round, oval, square or rectangular.

  • Bolster Dog Bed - This is a donut bed or nesting bed that has an inner cushion with a raised cushion around the perimeter. They can be round, oval, square or rectangular. Donut type dog beds have a raised rim completely around the bed whereas nesting may have only part of the bed with a raised rim.

  • Orthopedic Dog Bed - A bed that is flat with even depth all around. They can be round, oval, square or rectangular. A firm mattress that holds it shape.

  • Couch Style Dog Bed - These dog beds look like a stuffed chair or couch.

MEASURING TIP 2 - DETERMINE THE DIMENSIONS

Length and width are pretty simple, but when is comes to determining the thickness or depth, it can be tricky.

  • Using a soft, flexible tape measure, measure the length, width and depth of the outside of the dog bed. The depth needs to be measured at the thickest part and thinnest part.

    MEASURING TIP 3 - A MEASURING TRICK

When a bed is an odd shape or a special design, I use a trick to see if the fitted dog bed sheet will fit a dog bed. I multiply the length by the width by the depth (at deepest part).

    • A medium PawSheet is 36” x 27” x 6”, the total is 5,832 cubic inches.

    • A large PawSheet is 50” x 36” x 6”, totaling is 10,800 cubic inches.

    • If a dog bed measures 34” x 24” x 6”, the total is 4,896 cubic inches. Medium would fit.

    • If a dog bed measures 34” x 24” x 8”, the total is 6,528 cubic inches. Large would fit.

Thanks to PawSheet customers, additional information on fit is available. Below see three beautiful PawPals who were happy to share their pictures lounging on their PetFusion® dog beds - fitted with PawSheets.
